Eat the Yolks – A Book Review and Giveaway
I’m a huge egg fan! Like mega huge! If I run out of eggs, I literally panic. I buy 8 dozen eggs every other week to make sure I don’t run out!
I don’t have my own chickens…yet. We are renting at the moment and hope to move within the next few years to start our very own homestead. There *will* be chickens…lots of them! Until, then I am content (sort-of) buying pastured, soy-free eggs with beautiful dark orange yolks from my local farmer.
I had the opportunity to read Liz Wolfe’s new book, Eat the Yolks while I was flying to and from Florida for my most recent Nutrition Response Testing training. Liz blogs over at Real Food Liz and is an NTP (Nutritional Therapy Practitioner). I recently found out that she used to live right around the corner from me! I am sad that we never met in person!
Eat the Yolks is a breath of fresh air! It’s about so much more than eggs. It’s a book about REAL FOOD! It’s written with Liz’s unique paleo spin and witty sense of humor. I seriously LOL’d a few times on the airplane while reading it and had people looking at me sideways!
What I love most about this book is that it debunks some really outdated but still widely believed myths. Some of these myths include:
- Saturated Fat and the cholesterol in egg yolks clog your arteries
- We should replace REAL BUTTER with margarine
- All animal products are bad for the heart, kidneys, bones and gut
- Whole grains are the healthiest carbs and we need them for fiber
- The BEST way to get healthy is to count calories
I wanted to jump out of my seat and cheer after reading all of those! Liz shines a huge floodlight on the truth about each one!
One of my favorite quotes from Eat the Yolks is this:
Remember this, you are not dieting. You are living. You are the boss of you. If there’s any overarching problem with how we interact with out food, from what we choose to eat to why we choose to eat it, it’s that we let somebody else – government, guru, or book writer – make the rules for us.
Another favorite is:
Food that requires marketing jargon, fancy-schmancy labeling, or worse, a cartoon spokesperson (or spokes-rabbit, or spokes-tiger, or spokes-leprechaun) isn’t food. It’s an edible industrial product.
Ok, one more favorite!
…we’ve been tricked into thinking that something in a box with a list smacked on the side, is in some way, food. It’s not. It’s not food. It. Is. Not. Food.
I could go on and on but I would just end up quoting the whole book. You have to read this! It will open your eyes to a whole new world of real food!
