Strawberry-Spinach Smoothie with Banana and Gelatin
If you want to get a whole bunch of nutrients into one meal, make a smoothie! My kids love smoothies! In fact, my oldest daughter is our resident smoothie maker (though she didn’t make this one). There are endless combinations and flavors to experiment with.
I prefer making smoothies over juicing. I like getting the whole food in there, not just the juice extraction. I have a high-powered blender to easily accomplish this. I love my Blendtec! (Vitamix is an awesome brand too!)
The secret ingredient in this strawberry-spinach smoothie is gelatin. It is healing to the gut and highly nutritious. I use gelatin hydrolysate (I buy this brand) so I get the benefits but not the “gel”. There is banana in this smoothie that thickens it so I don’t need additional thickeners. It can be made without the gelatin, but I really like having the added nutrients.
It’s winter at the time of posting so strawberries and spinach are not in season. Gasp! I know! I am breaking my rule of eating only in season! I use frozen instead because I’ve extended the harvest by freezing both when they were in season.
If you don’t have access to raw milk or don’t do dairy, I recommend substituting with coconut milk (I like this brand). You could also use almond or cashew milk, but there are no store-bought brands I recommend. You are better off making them from scratch to control what’s in them.
Feel free to add a couple of raw eggs to this smoothie for some added protein and nourishment. Do this only if you get your eggs from a trusted source. Some other add-ins could be chia seeds, hemp seeds or even coconut oil. You can also replace the milk or yogurt with milk kefir if preferred.
Please only use organic ingredients. Spinach and strawberries are high on the Dirty Dozen list for pesticides.
- 1 cup raw milk or coconut milk
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 cup strawberries
- 1/2 cup (or more) spinach
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 TBS Honey
- 2 TBS Gelatin
- Place everything in a blender and blend until smooth.
- Increase liquid if needed.

- The amounts are not set in stone. Play with the recipe to suit your tastes.
- I double the recipe for my family so there is plenty for everyone.
This strawberry-spinach smoothie passes the kid-test with flying colors every time I make it! They drink all of it and ask for more! Oh, and we love serving it with our cute, eco-friendly, reusable, stainless-steel straws!
Be nourished. Be happy.
